The Canberra Gunners are an Australian basketball team based in Canberra. The Gunners compete in the Men's NBL1 East and play their home games at Belconnen Stadium. The team is affiliated with Basketball ACT, the governing body for basketball in the Australian Capital Territory. Their sister team, the Canberra Nationals, play in the Women's NBL1 East.
In 1988, the Gunners made their debut in the SEABL. Former player Brad Barnes coached the Gunners to the SEABL East Conference championship in 2003. Canberra's NBL side, the Cannons, coincidentally folded in 2003, leaving the Gunners as the city's only elite male basketball team. In 2007, the Gunners lost in the SEABL East Conference grand final.
In November 2018, following the demise of the SEABL, the Gunners joined the Waratah League. The Waratah League was rebranded as NBL1 East for the 2022 season. The Gunners subsequently won the 2022 NBL1 East championship.
O Gunners é propriedade do Canberra Basketball Club, uma organização sem fins lucrativos que tem como objetivo promover o esporte do basquete na região de Canberra. A equipe é treinada por Te Taihau Paewai, um ex-jogador da NBL que também treinou a equipe sub-19 nacional da Austrália. O plantel do Gunners inclui vários jogadores talentosos, entre eles o armador Tremmell Darden, o ala-pivô AJ Ogilvy e o pivô Angus Glover.
O Gunners é uma equipe popular em Canberra e atrai grandes multidões para os seus jogos em casa. A equipe tem um forte histórico de sucesso na NBL1 East, tendo vencido o campeonato duas vezes em três temporadas. O Gunners é um candidato ao título em 2023 e espera fazer uma corrida profunda nos playoffs.
